Patrick Hennessey was on his way to work at 4 a.m in Orange County, Florida when he spotted two small figures on the road.
He slowed down and realized one was injured and the other refusing to leave her side.
Hennessey called the Orange County Sheriff’s Office instead of just driving by, and at 4:30 in the morning, two Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene.
Officers Boggs and Reed cautiously approached the two dogs. The injured dog was bleeding from a large gash in her leg after being struck by a car. They were nervous at first but seemed to calm down once they understood that the officers were there to help.
Hennessey said in a Facebook post, “Between myself and the officers, we were able to wrap some gauze and my bandana around it and stop the bleeding. She was very grateful and then we gave her and (the other dog) a beef stick that I had in my backpack.”
Instead of loading them into the car or simply holding them in place, the officers snuggled up to the pit bulls and comforted them while they waited for Animal Services to arrive.
A passerby named Adam had taken notice of the sweet scene, impressed with what he saw and wanted to compliment the officers. He later sent the photos on to the Sheriff’s Office who posted them on their Facebook page.
“The deputies stood by with the dogs until Animal Services arrived,” he wrote, “these pictures I took depict a loving nature from our deputies and will tug at any animal lovers heartstrings. Thank you.”
When Orange County Animal Services arrived, they were taken to a local shelter, cleaned up, and allowed to rest.
The dogs then named Liberty and Justice recovered brilliantly and deemed sweet and playful.
Meanwhile, the story had Facebook users praising the officers for their kindness and compassion, particularly those who love pit bulls and know how the breed is so misunderstood.
One commenter said: “Thank you so much, Deputy Reed and Deputy Boggs. When you can extend a helping hand to not just humans, but other creatures as well, it says a great deal about your character.”
“From a pit bull [sic] owner I thank you for spending time with these sweet babies they are very beautiful dogs. You and fellow officer are just absolutely amazing!”, read another.
